In the first month of the new year 2024, Samsung released its latest and greatest lineup of the S series: The Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and the Big Boy S24 Ultra.
It’s been a while and since then the pricing of these flagships have been dropped. But as the S23 user, should you upgrade to the latest ones?
S23 vs S24: The Pricing
The first weighing-in factor when it comes to the upgrade decision is the pricing. The base model (which we will be talking about in this article) was launched at the same price of $799 in the US. Whereas the pricing may vary if you’re reading this from the UK.
But now since both phones have grown older, there is a significant price drop. You can find an S24 for around 600 bucks. Whereas your own Galaxy S23 will be valued at around $500.
The pricing of the newer S24 seems lucrative. But is it worth going through the hassle of copying and setting up your phone while you spend $100? This will be answered in the following specs and practical life comparison. Let’s dive deeper if it’s worth upgrading or not.
Though, for the price it might seem like worth upgrading to the latest from the S lineup.
S23 vs S24: The OS Update Promise
Yes, that’s the promise for which I can be inclined to upgrade my S23 to the S24.
With this year’s Unpacked event, Samsung has stated their new S lineup will receive major OS updates for freakin’ seven years which is huge. With the power of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 coupled with the updates, I think it’s worth upgrading your phone and being satisfied with it for a couple of years.
On the flip side, the S23 will receive major Android updates for just four years, one of them has already been consumed. I recently updated my S23 within minutes through my high-speed Xfinity internet and now it’s running on Android 14.
Anyhow, the bottom line of this section is that yeah, I will upgrade to S24 for the seven years of major OS updates.
S23 vs S24: It’s All About AI for the S24
One of the most significant upgrades doesn’t come around in the form of hardware this year but the software. Even Samsung marketed its Galaxy Unpacked with the Galaxy AI. But is the noise around the AI is worth it or not?
Spoiler alert: it is not. It’s nice to have the AI-powered features but after using the S24 for a month, I don’t think it’s crazy and it doesn’t make any huge difference in my life. For one, the circle-to-search feature is the one I like the most along with some other photo editing features just like what the Pixel 8 was doing.
Other than that, I think it’s just a gimmick and the AI hasn’t matured enough to make any big difference in our lives, especially with the one we have in S24.
The S23 is a basic phone without these gimmicks which might be nice to have for some people but for most people, it would be OK to not have them in their phones.
So, for Galaxy AI you should not upgrade.
S23 vs S24: Performance, Cameras, and Everything Else
I have combined multiple sections into one because there isn’t anything worth talking about separately.
The first bit is the processor. The S24 has the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 which is slightly more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The gaming experience remains almost similar to last year’s S23. Apart from gaming, it is expected that the S24 will easily manage multitasking just like the S23.
So, performance might not be the case for many to upgrade.
Let’s talk about the cameras. The S24 takes arguably the best photos and videos out of any smartphone in the world right now. The photos that I took had plenty of light and they were nearly perfect, I loved them. As for the video, it remains almost similar to the S23.
If you take a lot of pictures then I suggest you upgrade to the S24.
Another specs upgrade that can help you make a better decision is the battery. The S24 is a new phone so there will be less wear and tear when it comes to the battery. Also, the S24’s battery is slightly bigger than that of the S23. If you are one of the people who hates charging their phone in the middle of the day then S24 is worth the upgrade. It’s an easy all-day phone.
Design-wise, both of the phones are similar in design apart from the display. The S24 has significantly smaller bezels than that of the S23’s.
The Verdict
In my opinion, I think it’s worth upgrading to the S24 for 100 bucks and that hassle I mentioned about. In the end, the decision is yours. I have given out all the information about what I have experienced so far with both phones. Evaluate based on your needs like battery, camera, software support, and more.
